How to play: CANNY Word Game.

Players 1 to 6

Age 8+

It's more than just a game, it's a battle of wits where imaginations are fired and words are the weapons of choice.

Standard Level

Apply new players rule: Alphabet letters can be used more than once from the cards. (Duplicate letters)

Objective: Try to obtain good cards and then try to create the longest word or the word with the highest points.

The dealer shuffles the cards and then play begins with each player being dealt seven cards, one at a time, all face down. The remaining deck is placed aside. Players pick up the cards and hold them in their hands or place them on the table, all facing up.Each player specifies how many of their cards they wish to replace and discards them. The deck is retrieved, and each player is dealt in turn from the deck the same number of cards they discarded so that each player again has seven cards and 8 for the player with the bonus card.

Using the alphabet letters on the cards, players create and write down the word with the highest number of points. Alphabet letters can be used more than once from the cards. A player declares his/her words to the others, who then confirm each word and tally the points for that word.

Advance Level

Apply advance players rule: Alphabet letters cannot be used more than once from the cards.

Objective: Try to obtain good cards and then try to create the longest word or the word with the highest points.

The dealer shuffles the cards and then play begins with each player being dealt seven cards, one at a time, all face down. The remaining deck is placed aside. Players pick up the cards and hold them in their hands, being careful to keep them concealed from the other players.

Using the alphabet letters once from the cards, players create and write down the word with the highest number of points.

A player declares his/her words to the others, who then confirm each word and tally the points for that word.

For example the word CANNY: C = worth 2 points, A = worth 1 point, N = worth 8 points, N =worth 8 points, and Y = worth 13 points and the points tally = 32.

Rules

  1. The players may not replace more than three cards.

  2. The bottom card of the deck is never given as a replacement, to avoid the possibility of someone who might have seen it during the deal using that information. If the deck is depleted during the draw before all players have received their replacements, the last players can receive cards chosen randomly from among those discarded by previous players. For example, if the last player to draw wants three replacements but there are only two cards remaining in the deck, the dealer gives the player the one top card he can give, then shuffles together the bottom card of the deck and the earlier player's discards (but not the player's own discards), and finally deals two more replacements to the last player.

  3. Players can exchange 14 points for two additional cards after the cards have been replaced.

  4. No repeated words are allowed in the round or in the complete game.

  5. The points tally for the words should be done in turn, starting from the dealer.

  6. After each round, 14 points are awarded to the player with the longest word, 7 points in case of a tie, as a bonus.

  7. The player with the highest points for a word (without the bonus points) is the round winner and as a bonus the player is dealt an extra card in the next round. In case of a tie, both players get an extra card.

  8. The dealer changes in a clockwise direction and new cards are dealt after each complete round.

  9. Play a minimum of six and a maximum of eight rounds.

  10. After all the rounds have been completed, award 14 points to the player with highest point's word, 7 points in case of a tie. And then tally all the points of each player to determine the outright game winner.
